Arno Geens
I am a Belgian visual artist, curator and researcher working with outer space as a site-specific medium. My practice engages with the physical and conceptual conditions of the space environment to explore how art can be created, transformed, and experienced beyond Earth.
I also contribute to the cultural dimension of space through archival research, policy development, and advocacy—helping to shape how art and culture are integrated into the future of space exploration.
Created by Arno, curated by Space.

Astronautical Art
My artistic practice engages directly with the physical and conceptual boundaries of the space environment, treating them not as limitations but as co-creative forces that shape both form and meaning. Rooted in the notion of astromorphic art—a term I use to describe works materially and conceptually shaped by non-terrestrial conditions—I develop site-specific interventions beyond Earth that explore how transformation, (dis)connection, and the sublime intersect. Space becomes both medium and context, a living environment that inscribes itself into the work. These conditions unsettle familiar assumptions about presence, permanence, and perception, opening up a new aesthetic territory beyond our planet.

What if Space itself became the Artist?

Artistic Research
Curating Space
As a curator, I explore the intersection of contemporary art and outer space by shaping collaborations and projects that invite artists to engage with the material, conceptual, and environmental realities beyond Earth. My curatorial practice focuses on works that are not merely inspired by space but physically exist with it—where the space conditions become active agents in the artistic process. By facilitating these encounters, I aim to expand the language of contemporary art and contribute to the emergence of a cultural space that reaches beyond the planetary.

About
Arno Geens is a Belgian visual artist, curator and researcher whose practice is dedicated to exploring outer space as an artistic medium. His work engages directly with the physical and conceptual possibilities of the space environment treating these not as constraints, but as integral components of form and meaning. By creating site-specific interventions that are beyond our planet, he opens up new artistic territories where material transformation, disconnection, and the sublime intersect.
His practice questions how artworks can relate to the universe — how they are seen, valued, or remembered when separated from the viewer. His work explores themes of scale, deep time, fragility, erasure, and cosmic perspective to reflect on our relationship with Earth. With each project, he challenges the boundaries of what art can be, and where it can live.
As the founder of the Astronautical Art Initiative he explores the historical trajectories and contemporary practices of art within the outer space environment, honouring this legacy by archiving, preserving and interpreting the artistic artefacts of a developing spacefaring culture, ensuring that they are recognised as integral components of our common cultural heritage.
As the co-chair of the International Astronautical Federation's Committee on the Cultural Use of Space (ITACCUS) he actively shapes the future of our human spacefaring culture.
Arno is a 2024 Karman Pioneer and a member of the Oxford Space Initiative (OxSI) at the University of Oxford.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts (FRSA), a space artist at the International Association of Astronomical Artists (IAAA) and a US Department of State International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) alumnus.
Arno holds a MA in Graphic Design & Multimedia, a MSc in Space Studies and a PgD in Philosophy & Cognitive Science. He is a Smart Space alumnus at the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford.
