INTERLUDE

Chromocosmology did not reach the outside of the International Space Station. And that is just fine.

A few days after arrival, the mission team identified a communication error in the container housing the work. The consequence was precise: no in-space imaging. The transformation that was about to begin would occur without witnesses, without documentation, without the images that would later allow the work to be read. A performance with no record is still a performance, but it changes what the encounter with the returned object will mean. Days later, a second problem emerged. A fault developed in the Canadarm robotic arm, the system that would remotely carry Chromocosmology from the airlock to its final position on the exterior of the station. Without the arm, installation was impossible. The decision was made to bring the work back home.

What I want to resist is the word setback. That word implies the performance had a fixed script and deviated from it. That these events were interruptions to the work rather than part of it. But Chromocosmology is not a fixed script. It is a performance shaped by all the conditions and actors that constitute it: the space environment, the regulatory apparatus, the mission infrastructure, the operational dependencies. The communication error and the robotic arm failure are not external to the work but they became part of it. They are what happens when you hand a project to a system far larger than yourself and let it run. The performance always included the unforeseeable. This is simply what the unforeseeable looks like when it arrives.

The container will be returned to Earth. The communication system will be repaired. The Canadarm will undergo a spacewalk repair. And Chromocosmology will launch again in December, to resume Act I where it left off. Between the original launch and the relaunch, something has been added that was not in the original score: an Interlude. Unplanned, unscripted, and entirely consistent with what a performance at this scale has always required.
